"Find one detail you like and want"

How and where did you first meet? And how long have you been together?

We first met working together in Beijing. We’ve been together for over 5 years now!

Tell us about your proposal, how did you propose?

We were on a trip to Tromso, Norway and planned to see the Northern Lights. After six hours of driving in a snowstorm in -17 degrees, we were luckily enough to witness the Aurora. This was not the right moment for a proposal though… luckily the next day we had booked a whale watching trip on a boat. We arrived at the location after a few hours sailing and were met by pods of Orca Whales and Humpback Whales. It was an incredible experience. Made only better when I pulled a ring box out of my pocket. I half knelt, half crouched (to avoid getting soaked from the snow cover underfoot) and asked Emily to marry me. She said yes!

What was your inspiration behind your engagement ring?

I actually sourced the Australian Parti Sapphire myself prior and wanted to create something that really made it shine. What was created really does, not only showcase the gem’s beauty, but elevates it too! I was amazed at how my ideas were so easily created into a real ring.

How did you find the bespoke process and our services?

Living in China, communication is always hard with the UK owing only to the time difference but May made the process very easy and stress free with quick and detailed communication. I was also working under a tight time frame and every effort was made to ensure my time frame could be adhered to. I really can’t speak highly enough of the whole process. It was a pleasure and I very clearly made the right choice!

What was your favourite part of the process?

Seeing the ring for the first time was incredible! I hadn’t seen the gem at all as I had sourced it in the UK but from China. It was delivered to my relatives who then sent it to the jeweller. The first time I opened the box was the first time I had seen any of it in person and it was truly beautiful.

What would be your one piece of advice for couples looking for an engagement ring?

Find one detail you like and want, and make the rest work around it. I knew I wanted colour. I knew I wanted an Australian Parti Sapphire with green and yellow. Once I found it, I just made the rest work around it.
