Learn more about diamond shoulder engagement rings

What are diamond shoulder engagement rings?

A development of the solitaire, diamond shoulder engagement rings typically feature one centre diamond, with a diamond set band. The band features melee diamonds that typically weigh less than 0.2ct each - as little as 0.001ct. A diamond band can be a subtle embellishment or a statement design feature - either way, a diamond band is a beautiful addition to any centre diamond or gemstone, and a great way to inject a little more sparkle into your engagement ring.

Whilst some engagement rings may feature an eternity of diamonds on the band, which means 100% of the band is covered in diamonds, this isn’t always the most practical style choice. This limits the ability to resize the engagement ring, and typically we set diamond shoulder engagement rings with between 40-80% coverage - but this is totally up to you.

Why we love diamond shoulder engagement rings

Diamond shoulder engagement rings are amongst some of the most popular designs we see clients asking about, and have certainly risen in popularity over the last few years. Not satisfied with a solitaire, those after diamond band engagement rings are after that subtle extra touch of sparkle to complete their engagement ring

Although typically set with diamonds, the band of an engagement ring can also feature coloured gemstones, either to match the centre gemstone or add a little contrast to the design. As most coloured gemstones aren’t as hardy as diamonds, it is important to choose a gemstone that is resistant to chipping or breaking, such as sapphires and rubies, which measure at 9 on the Mohs scale.

Whether you choose a classic diamond shoulder engagement ring design or choose to add coloured gemstones the style has become a contemporary classic, most commonly set in platinum as to not disrupt the bright, white brilliance of the centre and melee diamonds.

Celebrities with diamond shoulder engagement rings

Karlie Kloss

Just like her, Karlie Kloss’s engagement ring is a modern classic. The design is elegant - a perfect reflection of the supermodel - featuring a large cushion cut diamond, set on a classic scallop set diamond band. The platinum setting is a flattering choice for Karlie’s complexion and contemporary aesthetic.

Fae Williams

Instagram star Fae Williams’ engagement ring is an edgy take on the classic diamond band engagement ring. Featuring a round brilliant cut diamond, the rub-over set diamond is flanked by three melee diamonds on their side of the band. The sharp taper of the band as it meets the centre diamond gives the engagement its edgy, geometric appeal. It’s all in the subtle details.
