As we celebrate our 75th anniversary here at Holts Gems, we look back on the trends and events that have shaped our industry. In this article we explore the exciting decade of the 1970s.
During the 1970s, remarkable technological advancements brought accessibility and convenience to households around the world. In the United Kingdom, an exciting event took place in 1977, as Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her silver jubilee, marking an incredible 25 years on the throne.
In terms of jewellery trends, funky geometric rings took the spotlight in the 70s, while Jackie O's marquise ring set fashion trends. Princess cuts became popular in the early 70s, often showcased on a solitaire band or paired with side baguettes. A notable trend in the mid 70s was the rise of matching wedding bands for couples, perfectly complementing the engagement ring.
When it came to wedding trends, grooms embraced the fashion-forward choice of coloured tuxedos. High Necklines and bell sleeves became popular for wedding dresses, allowing brides to express their personal style. Bridesmaid dresses became a canvas for vibrant colours, often complemented by hats or flower crowns. Wedding ceremony venues also started to deviate from traditional settings and explore different settings. 1970s weddings could range from traditional to unconventional, embracing individuality.
The decade witnessed several famous weddings. In 1970, Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright tied the knot in Detroit. The UK had its own royal wedding in 1973, uniting Princess Anne and Mark Phillips. Anne wore a tiara passed down from the Queen Mother, which had also graced Queen Elizabeth's wedding day. Finally, in 1978, Aretha Franklin and Glynn Turman joined in matrimony in Detroit. Join us as we delve further into the fascinating history of jewellery and weddings in the next instalment of our anniversary series.
