Holts Gems: A Journey Through Time
As we celebrate Holts Gems 75th anniversary we are taking a look back at the decades and the events that have shaped our industry. Last week we focused on the founding year 1948 to the end of the 40s in 1949. This week we will take a look at the 1950s.
What happened in the 1950s?
The 50s were post world war II and the economy was booming. This caused a consumer-led economy. There were many events that shaped the jewellery and fashion of the 50s. One of the major events in the 50s was Elizabeth II becoming Queen of England. She became Queen in 1952 and had her coronation in 1953.
Fashion and Jewellery
In 1950 the movie Father of the Bride came out and Elizabeth Taylor's dress in the movie set trends with sweetheart necklines, fitted bodices, and full skirts. In the mid 50s tea length skirts became very popular.

After DeBeers successful diamond campaign, proposing with an engagement ring became the norm in the 50s. The most popular style was a solitaire stone with diamond baguettes. Jackie Kennedy’s engagement ring set trends and emerald cut stones became a popular choice. In 1955 Mairlyn Monroe’s eternity band was a trend setter as well. In 1958 the hope diamond was donated to the Smithsonian by Harry Winston. It has remained there to this day.
