The 4 Cs: Carats

Posted on the 10th November 2016

Definition of carat: A carat is a unit of weight used for precious gemstones including both diamonds and coloured gemstones.

'Carat' refers to the weight of the gemstone, rather than its physical size, 1carat is = 200 milligrams. Due to the differing density of different gem materials, two carat stones may be different physical sizes - so bigger is not always better!

For example, compare a diamond and a ruby, the ruby gemstone family is denser than a diamond so a 1 carat Ruby will look smaller than a 1 carat diamond.
