Mystical Moonstone

Posted on the 28th October 2014

Getting you in the spirit of Halloween, the Holts London team thought we’d educate our loyal followers about the enchanting and mystical gem called moonstone. This unique gemstone originates from Sri Lanka and boasts a shimmer in pale blue on a transparent, colourless background. This iridescent sheen is caused by a term called adularescence, an optical phenomenon producing a mystical glow from below the surface of the gemstone. In India, moonstones are regarded as ‘dream stones’ particularly worn by women as it is believed to help fertility. It is also thought that if lovers placed it in their mouths during the full moon, then their futures would be revealed. I wonder if this is actually true... Moonstone has been a common gemstone in jewellery creations for years made famous by the French master goldsmith Rene Lalique and was incredibly common over a century ago at the time of Art Nouveau. They are most commonly cut in a cabochon giving it that smooth oval shape that we are oh so familiar with. However, this fabulous gemstone does have a little weakness and that is the low score of 6 on the Moh’s scale. It’s softness means it has to be handles with care and that scratches and defects will naturally occur over time but there’s nothing a good old polish cant fix, making it as good as new. Since bluish moonstones of good quality have been becoming more and more of a rarity in recent years, prices have risen sharply making them more and more desirable. And it just so happens that we have included this precious gem in our very first, debut jewellery collection, The Holts London Collection. Inspired by the incredible city of London, our award-winning design team have created and handcrafted luxury unique pieces to add to the already outstanding collection. The collection will launch on 12th November in-store. Explore the Holts London Collection.
