Happy Hanukkah

Posted on the 16th December 2014

Today marks the first of the eight days of the Jewish Holiday of Hanukkah, also known as the Jewish Holiday of lights. The Holts team would like to wish Mr and Mrs Holt, Jason, Mena and everyone else a very very happy Hanukkah. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this tradition, here is a brief insight into the 'Festival of Lights'. In 168 BCE, the Jewish Temple was seized and taken over by Greek soldiers, forcing all the Jews to convert and worship the Greek Gods. The High Priest called Mattathias stood up to the Greek soldiers and as a consequence had a villager and his family killed. Mattathias, his family and other Jews who ran away in protest to the Greeks were given the name ‘The Maccabees’. Eventually, the Maccabees regained control and they returned to the Temple in Jerusalem. To reinstate the sanctity of their Jewish Temple, they had to purify the Temple by burning ritual oil in the Temple’s menorah for eight days. But to their dismay, they discovered that there was only one day's worth of oil left in the Temple. They lit the menorah anyway and to their surprise the small amount of oil lasted the full eight days. This wonderful story is now celebrated each year for eight days with gifts and the lighting of the Menorah. Here is a quick little Holts Hanukkah gift guide to spoil your friends and family with this festive season.
