February - Amethyst

Amethyst is the purple variety of the large mineral species quartz, and can range in colour from a very light to a very dark rich deep purple.

Amethyst’s name is derived from the Ancient Greek word ‘amethustos’, which translates as ‘not drunk’, relating to the belief that Amethyst had powers to protect its owner from the effects of heavy drinking. Subsequently, a large amount of wine jugs were made from or encrusted with the gem.

It is typically found in Minas Gerais in Brazil, and very fine quality Amethyst comes from Russia and can display a much sought after ‘red flash’.

Amethyst is believed to provide the wearer with tranquility, peace and protection.
