Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine. Olivine forms in igneous rocks such as Basalt and is rather abundant however gem quality Peridot is rather rare. Unusually, Peridot is one of a few gems which only occur in one colour, which is called idiochromatic. The intensity of the colour however is due to the amount of iron (Fe) is present, so it can range from quite a light yellow green to a darker brownish green. Peridot typically has minute inclusions caused by chromite crystals, which induce flat stress lines and resemble water lilies.
Peridot can be found in Zabargad (St Johns Island) in the Red Sea. It is said that the discovery was made by pirates centuries ago, however the location was lost for many years, until it was re-discovered again in the 1900’s.
Peridot is said to enhance the virtues of truthfulness, faithfulness and loyalty within the wearer.
